Wedding Planning
Planning an Outdoor Wedding in Houston
Yes, You Can. Here's How.
Houston gets hot. Everyone knows. But Houston also gets three seasons of perfect outdoor weather, and with the right planning, even summer works. The key is guest comfort. Not the flowers. Not the arch. The people in the chairs.
The Climate Reality
Nine months of the year, Houston is warm to very warm with humidity that shows up uninvited. The other three months swing between crisp fall evenings and sudden cold fronts. Rain is always possible. None of this is a reason to go indoor-only. It's a reason to plan.
Welcome Bags Save Weddings
Put these in every guest's hands before the ceremony: a folding fan, a bottle of water, sunscreen, and bug spray. Spring and fall, add a light blanket or pashmina for the temperature drop after sunset. These aren't extras. They're the difference between guests who stay and guests who leave early.
Timing Is Everything
Schedule the ceremony for late afternoon. Not noon. Not 2 PM. Late afternoon, when the sun is lower, the light is golden, and the temperature has dropped ten degrees from peak. Your photographer will love you. Your guests will love you more.
The Backup Plan
Every outdoor venue worth booking has an indoor backup. Ask about it on the tour. Ask what it looks like, how many it holds, and how fast the switch happens. A venue that can move two hundred people indoors in thirty minutes without skipping dinner service is a venue that's done this before.
Mosquitoes Are Real
Citronella torches and candles, placed around the perimeter. Your venue should handle this, but ask. Nobody remembers the centerpieces. Everyone remembers getting bitten.
Make Them Comfortable
Blankets for cool evenings. A heater or two if the reception runs late in fall or winter. Shade structures for daytime ceremonies. The goal is for guests to forget they're outside. That's when the wedding starts.
